“Have” as auxiliary

How “have” is used as an Auxiliary verb

Have – as an auxiliary is used to form verbs in their perfect form in all tenses (affirmative, negative and interrogative)

  • Present Perfect:
  • I have worked here for ten years
  • Has John worked in New York?
  • Present perfect continuous:
  • It  has been snowing all night.
  • Have you been running? Your face is very red.
  • Past Perfect:
  • When I arrived the train had already left.
  • Had you met his parents before last weekend?
  •  Past Perfect Continuous:
  • When I arrived at the match they had already been playing for 15 minutes.
  • Meena hadn’t been running for even five minutes when she fell over and broke her leg.
  • Future Perfect:
  • Ahmed will have finished at university by this time next year.
  • Flora and April will have had five hours of classes by the end of the day.
  • Future Perfect Continuous
  • By the end of the month I will have been working here for ten years. How time flies!
