Relative clause English grammar

What are Relative Clauses in English grammar?

When we combine two grammatically correct sentences, with a subject and verb, together :

  • This is the table.
  • My father made it.

the two sentences join together to become two clauses (components) of the new sentence:

  • – This is the table which my father made.

They are linked (connected) by a Relative Pronoun

See more information about the relative pronouns who, whose, whom, what, that, which, where

Use: to help us form more mature language

Defining Relative Clauses

They help us to define the object or subject of the sentence.

The example below helps us to understand which is the table that my father made.

This is the table which my father made.

Non-defining Relative Clauses

They give us extra information about an object or subject, they are not necessary for us to define (identify) them.

Mr and Mrs Smith are police officers.

Their house is on the corner.

Mr and Mrs Smith, whose house is on the corner, are police officers.
